In a world where technology dominates, there’s something attractive about the simple yet awe-inspiring hobby of rock collecting. Embark on a journey to discover the hidden beauty and unique treasures of Mother Nature at Prebble’s Pebbles Rock Shop at Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park.
Rock collecting is an underrated hobby, but it shouldn’t be. Not only does it connect us with the planet’s geological history, but it also offers a tangible, hands-on experience that’s educational, possibly even therapeutic but most of all it’s just plain fun!
More than anything, rock collecting is a hobby that brings simple joy and lots of smiles to practitioners. As a Colorado cave destination and home to stunning geologic wonders beneath the surface, we know that when it comes to rocks there’s always more than meets the eye, and that’s part of the delight. The same is true of our new rock shop, Prebble’s Pebbles!
What’s in a Name?
Prebble’s Pebbles pays homage to Pete Prebble, an avid spelunker and one-time owner of the Fairy Caves. Prebble purchased the caves in 1961 from the Darrow family, the original owners of the 80-acre property. Along with his team of cavers, Prebble is attributed with the discovery Jam Crack, as well as the Barn and King’s Row, both highly decorated cave rooms featured on the King’s Row Tour.
A Window into the Past
Children instinctively know that every rock has a story to tell. What they perhaps have yet to learn may be that the story they hold in their hand is one etched in time, over millions of years of geological processes. From the wide variety of sedimentary rocks to the intricate patterns of igneous formations, each rock reflects the powerful forces of nature that shaped it. Rock collecting allows enthusiasts of all ages to uncover these geologic stories, not only providing insights into the earth’s formation but stoking the imagination as well.
Possible Therapeutic Benefits
Some people believe rocks have properties that benefit the body, mind and soul. Rocks commonly associated with therapeutic attributes include quartz and semi-precious stones. Though there is little scientific evidence to back up their medical efficaciousness, ancient Egyptian, Greek and Chinese cultures have traditions that include the healing power of stones. White quartz crystals are touted to boost energy levels, tiger’s eye to overcome fear and anxiety, jasper to alleviate stress, and rose quartz to help in the love department. The Prebble’s Pebbles rock shop carries a variety of crystals. Even if they don’t ultimately cure what ails you, these stones and minerals are indeed beautiful to admire and that alone can restore a sense of stasis to a topsy-turvy day.
The Joy of Discovery
The thrill of discovery is a fundamental aspect of rock collecting. There’s a childlike wonder in finding a beautifully patterned agate or a pyramidal-shaped quartz crystal. Whether you’re searching for the perfect mineral specimen to add to an existing collection or a pocket-sized treasure to take home as a souvenir, the simple joy of rock collecting is a hobby that is accessible to one and all.
